How It Works

Every Ethereum transaction requires gas to execute. The total transaction fee is calculated as:

Transaction Fee = Gas Limit × Gas Price

The gas limit defines how many units of gas the transaction is allowed to consume. The gas price (in gwei) is how much you pay per unit of gas. One gwei equals 10-9 ETH.

To convert the fee to USD, multiply the ETH cost by the current market price of ETH:

USD Cost = (Gas Limit × Gas Price × 10-9) × ETH Price

Common Gas Limits

Transaction Type Typical Gas Limit Description
ETH Transfer21,000Simple ether send between wallets
ERC-20 Transfer65,000Sending tokens like USDT, USDC, DAI
ERC-20 Approve45,000Approving a spender for token transfers
DEX Swap150,000 – 300,000Uniswap, SushiSwap, and similar DEXs
NFT Mint250,000 – 500,000Minting an NFT on ERC-721 / ERC-1155
Contract Deployment1,000,000+Deploying a new smart contract

Tips for Saving on Gas

  • Time your transactions — Gas prices are lower during off-peak hours (weekends, late nights UTC).
  • Use Layer 2 solutions — Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base offer significantly lower fees.
  • Batch transactions — Some protocols let you batch multiple operations into one transaction.
  • Set a max fee — Use EIP-1559 max fee to avoid overpaying during gas spikes.
